How much is it gonna cost to get my 80000 mile timing belt changed on a 2002 vw jetta TDI ?

Thats a HUGE job, but very necessary also. I just had mine done, it was between 700 and 900. Its not a bad idea changing the accessory belt also.How much is it gonna cost to get my 80000 mile timing belt changed on a 2002 vw jetta TDI ?VW is still using belts on a Diesel? It should be a chain and not need replacing. No wonder I don't have one. I would guess around $700.

no it is a belt and you definitely want to do it if your car has 80k on it. most likely it will cost you from 700 to 900 dollars to have it replaced. make sure you have the dealer replace the water pump at the same time because it runs off of the timing belt. it is much easier to replace the water pump now then to have to pay a lot later when it fails.

I just had it done on a 98 beetle TDI and it cost $270 from an independant VW shop that has done fantanstic work for me for the past 3 years. And that includes the water pump! Avoid the Stealership!!!

Post a question here about good shops to you locally:

99.9% sure it's a belt 1.9L TDI is a belt. You can expect to spend anywhere from $500.00 to $650 to do the job right. You'll want to replace all timing pulley's, including tensioner, front oil seal %26amp; water pump (%26amp; of course the belt!)
Depending on where you live, you can expect $400-$600.

Anything less, and I'd question where they got the parts, anything more, and I'd shop around.

http://www.tdiparts.com/ has the timing BELT kit

and it's definately a BELT, not a chain.

the kit costs $275.00

They have a good price on it, too.

That kit includes the waterpump, with a metal (not plastic) impeller, in the price.

The belt they use itself is also a %26quot;better%26quot; than standard belt. I know, I have used this very kit myself.

a 98 beetle, and a 2002 jetta tdi are not the same car, so the other posters $270 does NOT apply to you. The job is easier on his car. - I also am positive he didn't get his water pump replaced for that price.

Oh, and doctrine3. Since you obviously don't know what you are talking about (since it is a belt, and not a chain) why don't you pipe down, and keep your opinions to yourself. There is a reason why vw uses a belt instead of a chain, and I am not going to go, here, into why that is, except to say that it's not a %26quot;cost saving factor%26quot;
A belt for my car costs25 bucks and it takes me an hour to hour/half to change. I got no power tools.

so, whatever their rate is.

Let me put it this way....what is the cost for a new motor - - cause that is what it is gonna cost ya when the belt breaks. So, is it worth it? Besides, you do not have to get it done by the dealership, just a garage that does work on VW's. Ask other VW owners...the younger group. They won't be going to the dealership to get repairs.
