At least how many kilometers do we have to replace the timing belt and water pump?

i have mazda protege 2001 1.6L with 156,000 kilometer on it, is it the right time before summer to change the timing belt and water pump? for me this car runs like brand new since i change main control relay....thank you very much...canadian answer only please...At least how many kilometers do we have to replace the timing belt and water pump?Woah woah woah. You don't have to replace those until they break (or at least until they start making funny noises)! Who knows, you might be able to get 200,000 km out of those. Ok, so when do you know when it is time to get it replaced...when your car starts making a funny noise. Both the water pump and the timing chain will make a clicking noise when they are on thier last leg. When that noise starts happeneing, then I suggest you take your vehicle into a shop and have them replace the necessary parts.

And don't be fooled by the dealerships. Toyota especially will tell you that those parts need to be replaced even if you only have 50,000 km on your vehicle. It is something fast and easy for them to replace, but they can charge you $300 for it. Wait until it breaks...don't throw your money away.

Check you owners manual. The timing blet is normally changed every 100,000 km. If your water pump is operated by the timing belt then it would probably best to replace it at the same time.
