'94 Saab 900s timing belt change?

How many hours and/or how much would it cost to replace it?'94 Saab 900s timing belt change?Since you do not say if you have a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder (makes a big difference), I will give you estimates for both in the USA northeast. Note that special Saab tools are needed to do this so only go to a dealership or a Saab repair shop you can trust to do this right. Done wrong and it will result in valve train damage and a broken engine. Also note depending on what is found more parts such as a timing belt cover will have to be replaced resulting in additional charges (detailed below):

4 cylinder. Parts cost for a 4 cylinder kit around $250 to $300 depending on where you go. Labor is going to take approximately 3 hours. If labor is $80 an hour, estimate $240 more. Overall cost around $490 to $550. If you need a timing cover add another $180.

6 cylinder. Parts for a 6 cylinder kit are $600 to $650 usually. Labor is about the same or $240 total. Overall cost is about $840 to $900. The timing cover comes as part of the kit so there is no extra cost for that as it is included (it usually needs replacing).

I hope you have the 4 cylinder as that is a less troublesome engine on this particular generation. Good luck.

While it is true the 4 cylinder does not have a belt, it does have a chain which can still break and do valve train damage unless replaced as recommended as it does tend to stretch and break in most circumstances.

Only 6cyl. has a Timing belt. Can be done w/o special tools but easier with the tool that I have. The problem here is that the tensioner usually needs to be replaced and the water pump. If this is not maintenance and the belt has jumped teeth, the valves will be damaged, requiring cyl. head rebuild. Ck. eeuroparts.com for prices. With experience, think 3hrs, approx $420.00 plus Labor. Not recommended for DIY unless confident. 4cyl. has timing chain, unlikely to need replacement. Saab says to remove power unit if broken. Can be replaced in car with chain tools if just noisy, stretched, but indicates lack of oil, often frnt crankseal comes out of oil pump causing leak and low oil. Not for DIY.
