What are some problems that can arise when changing a timing belt in a 2002 WRX?

i just bought my first car (02 wrx- 4 dr) about a month ago, the previous owner replaced the timing belt just before i got it. i have put on about 400km and the other morning it would not start (it turned over but would not go)

i brought it to the garage and the guy told me that in replacing the belt it may have damaged the valves of some sort?

i don't speak car and need some help! has anyone ever had this issue and/or know what it could be? Also how much would i be looking at, $ wise? What are some problems that can arise when changing a timing belt in a 2002 WRX?Well if the belt is off by even just a tooth or two and the valve train doesn't rotate correctly, the piston will touch the valve and bend it. It is not an easy job to do and if not done 100% correctly, it is 100% catastrophic for the engine. If the valve are bent even a tiny bit, you can't build compression to start the motor.

I don't think the timing belt is your problem. If that were broken, it wouldn't even turn over. The WRX has an interference engine so if the timing belt breaks, the engine is trash.

I would suspect that you might have a fuel problem since it is turning over. The most likely cause is a bad fuel pump. Try a simple test. Turn the ignition to the on position (not to crank) and see if you hear a whirring noise for a few seconds. If you do not, then the fuel pump (or the pump relay) is bad.

Try replacing the relay first. That is the cheapest.

If it ran for 400 km then I would guess that the previous belt change was done correctly. If the timing was off, it would not run. There would be backfiring and spitting out the intake.

I would look at the fuel system and ignition before worrying about a valve or belt problem.
