How much to change waterpump?

I was told I need to change my timing belt, fan belt and waterpump.



My waterpump is broken and has leaked coolant all over the belts.



They quoted me $680 (Canadian) Is this too high?



Also I have a warranty that covers engine, transmission and seals and gaskets?

However, if your belt is good, you don't need to pull it off and replace it. This is a lot of extra work and timing belts are not all that cheap either, usually around $60 plus the extra hour or 2 more labor to pull it off, put on the new one and align it correctly. Most bozos will never align it correctly with the camshaft rotors, and this leads to timing problems and ultimately engine problems. If all you need is the water pump, just loosen the timing belt and replace the water pump. Then tighten the belt. This will maintain your timing to factory settings and save you a lot of hassle.

I would think it would be covered, well the water pump at least. But if the damage to the belts was caused by the waterpump, then yes your warranty should cover it all.

Taking into account the exchange rate, it sounds about right. The main problem was the leaking water pump that seems to have caused the rest of the problems. I don't know if the water pump would be covered or not, ask.
Water pump is not covered, But you didnt mention the make of car,So it could be that much then again, that sounds pretty steep for a water pump and timing belt job.
The Timing belt is considered maintance. So it is not under warranty.



$680 Canadian is an OK price.



Since most front wheel drive cars have the timing belt and water pump close together it makes sense to do them at the same time. The Pump %26amp; Belt are not expensive. Getting to them is. The fan belts are fairly cheap and easy to do but since they are coming off any way replace them to.

the price for that service is high because of the labor involved in accessing the timing belt and water pump. if your water pump specifically is covered by your warranty then all you should have to pay for is the price of the belts. the timing belt has to be removed to gain access to the WP so if they are gonna cover water pump replacement then belts are the only expense you should have.



but it sounds to me as though you have what is called a powertrain warranty, which covers only engine and transmission and normally takes effect after your bumper to bumper warranty expires. this will not cover the WP as it is not considered part of the engine (even though it's bolted to it). on my car it takes about 6 hours to change the timing belt, and at dealer labor rates that's about $600. so the price seems fair. just make sure that the mechanic returns to you all the old parts, including belts, just as a way of checking to make sure the work was performed properly. and make sure they replace your timing belt...
The average life span of a timing belt should be around 80,000 to100,000 km for Japanese cars, and about 50,000 to 60,000 km for a Korean models. For continental cars, in between the 2 makes.



Normal a water pump, under normal usage, will be gone at around 60,000 to 80,000 km thus it is a common for the mechanic to suggest to you to replace both at the same time, even it is still running. Proactive is always better than reactive, just imagine how inconvenient you are now in. In fact, you are saving some money for getting both parts replace together.



For replacement of the fan belt - not critical if it is properly tensioned, proper condition and spin without making any sharp noise.



Every parts of the engine is subjected to fair wear and tear - you should be covered for the replacement of the water pump and timing belt, but not the fan-belt (external mounted).



If covered by warranty, go to the authorised agents for service (further warranty for the parts replaced and workmanship)!
