About how much should it cost for a timing belt to be changed in a 1996 Ford Escort?

I finally will have a chance to get my car fixed and before taking it to a mechanic, I'd just like to possibly get a general idea about how much it might cost to replace this. I understand probably most of the cost would be labor, and the timing belt itself is probably fairly inexpensive. Any help with this is very appreciated, and TIA.About how much should it cost for a timing belt to be changed in a 1996 Ford Escort?$300 and that includes replacing the water pump. It is all right there and you have to take it off anyways. Had it done a few years back

Basic guess is about $250.00

The belt is probably $30.00 to $40.00 and labor time is about 2 or 3 hours. Have the shop show you the labor time in their labor guide (Mitchell or Haynes) before you agree on the amount.

MR SS, where do you get your figure?? Mitchell labor time is 2.2 hours.

it depend on the shop labor rate, but on your car is should not be more than 3.5 hours of labor to replace the timing belt.

Check with your local shop and as them what is their labor rate.

if I have to guess then it should not cost you more than $320 dollar to replace the timing belt.

However you may want to have some extra work done while you in it, get your water pump, crank seal, cam seal replace at the same time, that should add another $150 to the original estimate.
If you have the 1.8 DOHC engine, around 350 give or take would be an appriate price. The 1.9 SOHC, anywhere around 280.00 or so. These figures are based on labor and parts, excluding tax.
Probably close to the value of the car, or around $800. If I were you, I would put that money down on a new or used car...
IF YOU ARE AT ALL USED TO WORKING WITH TOOLS GET A MANUAL AND A SET OF TOOLS IF YOU DONT OWN A SET AND DO IT YOURSELF . TAKE A FEW PICTURES IF YOU HAVE A DIGITAL CAMERA AS HOW IT SHOULD LOOK PUT BACK TOGETHER . FOLLOW THE MANUAL , GET SOME EXPERIENCE , AND SAVE SOME MONEY FOR THE HOLIDAYS COMING UP .
a belt should be between $17 and $30 for your car and the labor will probably cost as much as the belt even though it's a 10 minute job.
