I want to buy a 98 Honda Accord for about $6500, the mileage is 97k should the timing belt have changed?

If it hasn't been changed, about how much would it cost?I want to buy a 98 Honda Accord for about $6500, the mileage is 97k should the timing belt have changed? That's a lot of money for an 8-year-old car with nearly 100K miles on it. The timing bnelt better have been changed. You're probably looking at at least $200 to have it done.

Yes it should. But, I think that is way too much for that car. I would shop around a little more. 6500 can buy soo many good vehicles, you have alot of options. Good luck...

I believe it's recommended that a timing belt be changed every 100,000 miles. I would estimate it would be around $700 or less depending on if you take it to a Honda dealership. If it was me, I probably wouldn't worry too much about the timing belt because it's a Honda. There's other mechanical things that I would worry about more than the timing belt. For instance, if you buy the car off of an individual, then have they kept up w/the oil changes? That I think would be the biggest worry I would have.
By 97K it should have been replaced, but many people don't, they just trade them in. Cost of replacement varies, so call around and get estimates from reputable shops, including a dealer. Whatever the cost, it is far cheaper than repairing bent valves should the t-belt break on you.

If who you are buying it from doesn't know if it has been replaced, there is a good chance it hasn't been.
yes it should have been changed a while ago, if it hasn't that's going to cost around,150 bucks at the least to get that done to it,id suggest they have it done before you buy it,or at least they knock some off the price of the car, good luck on it.
seems like a lot of dough for a 10yr old car with almost 100K on it
Timing belt should be changed around 60 to 65K is about $600

I believe the recommended interval for changing timing belts on cars is around 80,000 miles. The price depends on where you take it to have it done. Call around and be sure to ask if they will guarantee their work.
I just checked Kelley Blue value of a used, 1998 Honda Accord with 97,000 miles, the cheapest style and Excellent condition. You are going to pay way too much money for the car. I'd check around.

Yes....around $250 parts and labor
...yes get new belt asap i looked at prices and 6500 is fair price if car is good...have a independant mechanic check it out...
If you want the car try to find out if the belt has been changed. With that many miles on it should have been changed say about 27 to 32 thousand miles ago. If it has not which it more then likely has. Tell them if the deduct the price of the timing belt being changed you will take it. The cost varies from shop to shop say around 325 plus. Also look in to see if the belt is around the pulley with the water pump. If it is while you are at it you might as well have that changed to. If that is done also around 4 plus.
Honda recommends timing belt replacement at 105,000 miles or 84 months under normal conditions. I'm with everyone else on the price of the car.
