My mechanic told me every 50k or so miles.

The rule of thumb for most cars is around 100k miles (are you using km? It's not clear in your question -- if so, that's 160,000 km). So you should still have a while left. I've done this and never had one fail on me.
On my car it is recommended around 65 to 70 thousand miles. If you have the owners manuel for it. Look in there and it should tell you some where in there.
ummm how old r u?
Hello,

First one is at 70k and then every 105k , I prefer every 70k (just makes it safe) plan on every second time (140) replacing the tensioner pulley and idler pulley. Use only OEM parts. You don't have to do the water pump at 140 if it is not leaking but is is a good idea. All the parts including pump probably cost close to $820 if done by someone with all the right tools. Be careful who you have work on it. A Bosch car service center is a good choice, or someone who specializes in European cars. Ask your Volvo friends that live close to you who they use.
